What kind of content can be placed in a leggit vault?
Any digital file: text (letters, credentials, codes), photos, videos recorded in the browser, PDF documents, spreadsheets, archives, crypto wallet credentials, etc. Per-file limit: 100 MB (Standard plan) or 500 MB (Premium).
Five types of vaults are available depending on your use case: see the vaults page for the details.
What is a family vault? How is it different from a post-mortem vault?
A family vault is a vault shared between living members of a family (couple, siblings, parents and children). All accepted members can consult, add, modify in real time — no need to wait for a death. Ideal for sharing Wi-Fi passwords, Netflix accounts, common administrative documents.
The post-mortem vault, on the contrary, only opens when the owner passes away. You can have both types in parallel: a family vault for everyday matters and a post-mortem vault for strictly personal transmissions.
How does leggit handle seed phrases and crypto wallets?
Crypto wallets benefit from a dedicated vault with reinforced security: mandatory double entry to validate a seed (you type it twice), default release mode "all present" or "with estate executor", specific audit log for any operation.
Important: leggit NEVER has access to your seed phrases in clear. If you forget your password AND your recovery trustees become unavailable, the seeds are permanently lost. Appoint 3 to 5 recovery trustees who are geographically spread out.
Can I record a farewell video or an audio message?
Yes, directly from your browser. Click "Activate camera", start the recording, speak, stop. The file is encrypted on your device and sent to our servers in chunks. A real-time gauge shows the size so you don't exceed the limit.
Limits: 100 MB per recording (~8-10 minutes in standard quality). WebM or MP4 format. No professional equipment required.
Can I schedule a birthday message for my children?
Yes. You write the message, choose the recipient, set the delivery date. As long as you are alive and active on leggit, the message is sent on the scheduled date (birthday, family ritual, life milestone). If you pass away before, the release mechanism applies to the message as well — your wishes are respected.
Personnes désignées (destinataires, tiers, exécuteur)
What is the difference between a recipient and a trustee?
A recipient receives the contents of your vault upon your death. A trustee never receives your content, but they help you validate your death, recover your password if you forget it, or testify that you are alive in case of absence.
Both roles can be assigned to the same person (a relative may be both recipient AND trustee), but they are two distinct functions you manage separately. Detailed comparison table on this page.
What is an estate executor in leggit?
A recipient with a special status (typically a notary, a lawyer or an official executor) whose presence is mandatory to open the vault. If you appoint them, the vault CANNOT open without their consent, even if all other recipients agree.
Ideal for vaults with high legal stakes (estate, real estate, crypto). Special case: if the executor passes away before you, they are automatically removed and their consent is no longer required.
How do my loved ones receive the content?
Can I modify or remove a recipient?
What happens if a recipient passes away before me?
The recipient is automatically removed from the equation and the quorum is rebalanced. Detection works through the same 4 death verification paths that apply to yourself (INSEE, notary, operator, trustees).
If too many recipients pass away and the effective quorum falls below a threshold you have set (2 by default), the vault enters a "locked — operator decision" state and a leggit operator manually validates the release in degraded mode.
What if a recipient stops responding for a long time?
If a recipient stops signing in to leggit for a period you configure (180 days by default), they are flagged "presumed absent" and automatically removed from the equation. This prevents an unreachable recipient from blocking the post-mortem procedure.
You can also revoke them manually at any time from your interface.

What are the vault release modes?
Four modes to choose from:
- Independent: each recipient receives their access independently (recommended for informational vaults)
- Partial quorum: m recipients out of N must agree (e.g. 2 out of 3)
- All present: N out of N — a single absentee and the vault stays closed
- With estate executor: a designated recipient holds an absolute right of veto
How does the quorum work?
The quorum refers to the minimum number of recipients who must agree to open the vault. You set "m out of N". Example: with 5 children as recipients and a quorum of 3, at least 3 children must be present to reconstruct the key that opens the vault.
Technically, leggit uses a cryptographic scheme called Shamir Secret Sharing: the key is mathematically "broken" into N pieces, of which only m are required to reconstruct it. It is a cryptography theorem used in the most secure digital vaults in the world.
What is "joint presence"?
An option added to the quorum: recipients must submit their consent within the same time window (5 min, 1 h, 24 h or 7 days, your choice). Once the first share has been submitted, the others have the allotted time to submit theirs. Beyond that, the shares are purged and the procedure starts over.
Typical use case: you want your 3 children to open your crypto wallets vault together, in your notary's office, with a 1-hour joint presence. The session then resembles a true opening ceremony.
Can I prevent the vault from opening before a specific date?
Yes, that is the "floor release date". The vault CANNOT be opened before that date, even if you pass away before and all other conditions are met. Use cases: a letter to be transmitted to a child for their 18th birthday, a crypto vault to be opened only from 2030, an estate to be activated only after full settlement, etc.

What happens in case of a court order?
leggit may receive a requisition from a magistrate or a State authority. We will provide only what we hold: encrypted blobs, metadata, login history, account identity. Not the content in clear, because we never have it.
No technical "back door" is in place to enable decryption on demand. If a court demands content, it must go through the recipients or the trustees, who remain free to cooperate or not.

Page mémoriale
What is a leggit memorial page?
A public web page activated upon your death, where your loved ones and friends can pay tribute to you. Distinct from private transmission. It can include a biography, photos, a moderated guestbook, practical information about the funeral.
You can pre-write it during your lifetime or let your loved ones craft it afterwards. Activation: automatically upon your death (recommended) or manually by a relative after a waiting period.
Who can view my memorial page?
Anyone holding the URL. leggit memorial pages are public but their URL is not publicly listed — you (or your loved ones) communicate it to whoever should know. The guestbook can be open to all or restricted to people invited via a specific link.
You can appoint a moderator who will validate messages before publication.
Tarifs et pérennité
Why is there a paid plan?
What are the storage limits?
What happens if leggit closes?
And what if leggit ceases its activity?
We commit to three points:
- Minimum 6-month notice before effective cessation of activity.
- A full export of every vault delivered to each user, in an open and readable format (plain text + files).
- Transmission of the source code, technical documentation and encrypted databases to a designated trustee, with an escrow mechanism so that a successor can, if possible, take over.
The goal: no data lost, no transmission prevented.
