How leggit verifies a death
Before any release, leggit must be certain that you have passed away. Four independent paths can provide this information, and you decide how many are required.
The four paths
INSEE
leggit downloads each month the death file published by INSEE (the French national statistics body) on data.gouv.fr. A matching algorithm cross-checks your name, first name, date and place of birth. Exact match = death confirmed without human intervention.
Delay: ~30 daysPartner notary
A notary from our partner network validates your death certificate via a qualified electronic signature (eIDAS) on DocuSeal. Very fast, legally tamper-proof.
Delay: a few hoursleggit operator
Your loved ones forward your official death certificate to leggit. Two separate leggit operators verify the document before validation. A manual procedure for cases not covered by INSEE.
Delay: 24 to 72 hoursTrustees
The trustees you have appointed sign in to leggit and declare your death. A quorum (2 of 3 by default) is required for validation.
Delay: 7 to 14 daysHow many paths to validate?
Your choice. Default configuration: INSEE alone may suffice (official, reliable). You may require multiple combined paths: for example INSEE + trustees, or notary + leggit operator. This avoids false positives (INSEE namesakes) at the cost of additional delay.
