Trustees
Distinct from recipients: these people never receive the contents of your vaults, but they help you ensure the reliability of the service.
Three combinable roles
A single person can hold all three roles, or you can spread them across several people based on your trust and their availability.
Holds an encrypted fragment that, combined with other trustees, can trigger the release of the vault upon your death. Recommended: 3 to 5 people, quorum of 2 out of 3.
If you forget your password, these trustees help you reset it. leggit cannot do it alone. Recommended: at least 2 trustees, quorum of 2 out of 2.
In case of prolonged absence (vacation, hospitalization, coma), can confirm that you are alive in order to interrupt an automatic release in progress.
All leggit plans (including BASIC free) allow you to designate 2 trustees — that is the minimum security threshold to recover your password if you forget it (2-of-2 quorum). Without this designation, losing your password would mean permanently losing your data (zero-knowledge encryption).
How to choose your trustees wisely?
Favor people you trust, geographically spread out, in good health, and who at least know each other by name. Avoid appointing only your spouse and children — a family tragedy could paralyze the procedure. Mix family and close friends, or family and a notary.
